FAQ - Blowing Machines

1. What is the maximum distance I can blow the optical fiber?
With TERMA Blowers, the maximum distance of blowing fiber optic cables can exceed 2500 meters, depending on the model and configuration. For example, using the Typhoon 32/40 head with a MultiTank feeder and a compressor with a capacity of over 7 m³/min, real distances from customer construction sites exceed 2700 meters and more for HDPE pipes with diameters of 32 and 40 mm. For micro-channels, the distances are often smaller due to the greater number of bends and increased friction. Despite this, the record that we know about from a real construction site is as much as 3100 mm!
2. Do I need to use a compressor since TERMA blowers have an electric drive?
Yes, although TERMA Blowers, such as the MultiTank, have an electric drive to feed the cable, they still require a compressor to supply compressed air, which creates an air cushion that facilitates the movement of the cable through the channel. In addition, it is necessary to clean the canal with sponges before starting work, this will also allow us to identify if we are working on the correct secondary / pipe.
3. How far can I blow the fiber optic cable with just the head?
Using only an air pressure blowing head, it is possible to blow fiber optic cables, especially in micro-channels, over distances of up to several hundred meters, depending on the cable and channel specifications. For longer distances, it is recommended to use a full blowing machine with a mechanical feeder.
4. Is it worth using a piston for blowing into HDPE pipes with TERMA blowing machines?
Yes, using a plunger can be beneficial when blowing cables into HDPE pipes, as it helps guide the cable and increases the efficiency of the air pressure, which is particularly useful for longer installations. However, you must remember to use a plunger that does not have the possibility of stopping in the sewage system and blocking the work. This applies to situations when the HDPE pipe is, for example, minimally flattened. TERMA has its own flexible plungers, which are a very good accessory supporting the blowing process.
5. What is the maximum distance that can be achieved using only the electric MultiTank feeder?
When using only the electric MultiTank feeder without compressed air, the maximum distance is limited, usually to a few hundred meters, due to friction. The record we know of is 650 meters without air. For longer installations it is recommended to use the full configuration with a compressor.
6. What compressor do I need for microducting?
For blowing cables in micro-ducts (e.g. 7-20 mm), a compressor with a capacity of 1,5 m³/min and a pressure of 15 bar or more is recommended.
7. What compressor do I need for HDPE pipes?
For HDPE pipes with diameters of 32 and 40 mm, a compressor with a capacity of at least 7 m³/min and a pressure of 10-15 bar is recommended to achieve distances of up to 2500 meters and more. For larger pipes (50-63 mm), the largest machines with a capacity of 10-12 m³/min and a pressure of 10-12 bar will be needed.
8. What should I use to lubricate the optical fiber?
It is recommended to use special lubricants for blowing fiber optic cables, which reduce friction and are compatible with the cable sheath material, ensuring smooth installation. TERMA recommends Italian CARIMA products.
9. How to care for a blowing machine and how often should it be serviced?
Regular maintenance includes cleaning after each use, checking and lubricating the bearings in the outer rollers. Service should be carried out annually or more often if wear indicates it.
10. Is it possible to receive training in the use of TERMA blowing machines?
Yes, TERMA offers training in the operation of blowing machines. When purchasing the machine, the customer receives training in Poland in the price of the equipment. Training abroad is of course possible after prior arrangement. For details on training programs, contact the technical support team at +48 669 097 469 or via the contact page.
